Springfield M1866 Allin Conversion

This rifle started life as an M1863 rifle in 58 caliber. Originally issued to the New York 52nd New York Volunteers (the German brigade ). Most likely it saw service at most of the major battles including Gettysburg, Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg.

After the war these guns were re-arsenaled and converted at Springfield using the newly designed Allin trapdoor conversion. The second conversion changed this to a metallic cartridge 50-70. The conversion is dated to 1870. Many of these were sent west to the frontier for the Indian wars.
